TOPIC 3: Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programs. To what extent do you agree/disagree?
One of the most controversial issues today relates to whether high school students should be required to join in community service without being paid. From my perspective, I am convinced that non-profit community services should be the mandatory part of high school activities.
First of all, students can develop their interpersonal skills through these activities. For example, when they participate in a charitable event, they have opportunity to interact with many people. Therefore, they can learn how to communicate, manage conflicts and cooperate effectively. Moreover, they can gain some valuable experience and be aware of giving and helping others to make the community to be a better place. If social work are added to be a mandatory subject, students will quickly master their sophisticated social and emotional skills which are needy for both their work and daily life.
Community services can reinforce the connection between individuals, just like students, and community. Nowadays, people focus too much on themselves and sometimes, they accidentally forget that they are living with other people. Everyone has responsibility to contribute and dedicate their efforts to construct community. Students should be highly encouraged to join social services to have awareness of their duty to enhance society. The more they are involved in social activities, the more they feel deeply engaged with the community.
To conclude, community services without financial benefits should be an obligatory part of high school schedule due to full development of students.
