[Ielts] Writing task 2 - OPINION Essay

Some people think that planning for the future is a waste of time. They believe it is more important to focus on the present. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Word count: 293

One school of thought holds that paying attention to the present should be given more precedence over making plans for the future, which is deemed pointless. While acknowledging the reasons behind this thinking, I would argue it would be imprudent to downplay the importance of planning ahead.

On the one hand, it is understandable why some people believe that making plans is unjustifiable and that paying attention to current happenings is more worthwhile. Perhaps the chief reason would be that worrying about what has yet to come could stress people out, thus potentially exposing them to certain mental problems like depression or anxiety. Meanwhile, proponents with a prioritization of the present over the future would be satisfied with what they currently have achieved, thereby amplifying the happiness of life. Considering these, the idea of diverting focus to what is happening seems to be reasonable.

On the other hand, I am convinced that devising plans is nowhere near wasteful. Planning plays a crucial role in helping people forestall potential problems, which helps prepare for standby planning and complete the set goal swiftly with fewer mistakes. This is perfectly exemplified by how Vietnam successfully contained the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the first half of 2022. Had it not been for the meticulous preventative measures set by the Vietnamese government in the first place, this virus would have spread over the country and plagued the community and economy in profound ways. This is a testament to the instrumental role of planning ahead.

In conclusion, while there are justifications to advocate the idea that paying attention to current happenings is of paramount importance, I would contend that it is imprudent to downplay planning, given how it can assist people in minimizing possible risks.

You wrote the wrong type of essay. This is not a "discuss both views" essay, where the body paragraph transitions "on the one hand / on the other hand" are appropriate.

In an opinion essay, you have to clearly state your position.

Paragraph #1: Give a background statement to show that you have understood the question. Clearly state your opinion.

Paragraph #2: Give the first

Your first body paragraph does not support your opinion. The examiner will ignore it, and give you a very low mark on "Task response."
