Some universities now offer their courses on the Internet so that people can study online. Is this a positive or negative development?

It’s true that online courses are commonly offered in universities. Despite of some quite reasonable disadvantages, I strongly believe that internet-based learning has far more benefits.

One of the main drawbacks of online education needed to mention is the less human interaction. With traditional education style, students use direct communication on a daily basis, as a way to integrate themselves into educational environment in particular and social life in general. At school, besides achieving knowledge, students learn to make friends, work in a team, get rid of disappointment as well as gain confidence, and especially to compete with each other. Apparently, it is not the case for online courses. Secondly, internet-based learning requires self-discipline, which is hardly achievable from all of learners. Time management and organization skills indeed, are indispensable for learners to complete the courses and simultaneously balance their coursework against other priorities in life.

Nevertheless, online courses are becoming a trend today, thanks to their significant advantages. Flexibility is one of them. Learners can choose whatever subjects they desire, learn at any time that meets their timetable regardless of ages, genders or places. Furthermore, online programs are cheaper when compared to the one held in a traditional campus setting, as a matter of fact. Some programs are even completely free of charge, which is more than useful for anyone who wants to acquire a knowledge of something new. For example, my 50 year-old Uncle has recently started his free English course on the Internet and conveyed his sense of satisfaction when having given a chance to grasp a language without having to travel to class on a weekly basis.

In conclusion, although online learning still has several drawbacks, with its enormous benefits, I consider it to be a positive development overall.

People attend colleges or universities for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge etc.). Why do you think people attend colleges or universities?

Nowadays, education is the building block for career development therefore, universities and colleges became an important hub for career preparation. However, everyone has a different perspective for joining college, some wants to obtain a degree while others go for social interaction. There are many reasons why a person should attend a college or university are as follows:

Firstly, to live a better life in this new technology era, an individual needs to be competitive, passionate and knowledgeable. Being complacent would only block the door to the career development. Competition of our days has become formidable. An Individual who has good knowledge and degree are able to get good job in reputable organization so this would be a reason why to attend colleges or university for better competence.

Secondly, colleges or universities help us to imbibe the vast amount of theoretical knowledge and also integrate practical experience with future prospect. It expands our eye sight to new things which cannot be achieved in our common life. For instance, many people after degree completion become technocrat in their respective fields. “Knowldege is power”. Human is a social animal so joining college or university helped in social interaction, exchange knowledge, increase self-confidence and to get a decent job.

Thirdly, students living in hostel life would get a chance to learn skills such as time management, cooperation, team work spirit, live independently, manage things of their own and experience , diverse culture and custom that could also contribute to enhance career growth.
