Task 2: Scientific research should be carried out and controlled by the governments
rather than private companies. Do you agree or disagree?
Many people argue that the government should have priority to control scientific researches rather than private companies. Personally, I completely agree with this view that the studies should be funded and managed by the state.
There are two main reasons why people prefer the government should take the lead of all researches. One reason is that some of the researches may be flawed, to maximize the profit of the company which can cause a lot of trauma. In Vietnam, there were some scandals about a milk invention which had a good idea make for a useful purpose at first, and then the company wanted to make more money from it, so they changed the ingredients of the research and caused a lot of consequences for people. For example, in the first launch, there were more than 50 children were poisoned because of the ingredients in the milk were not suitable for children’s health, they were sick at first, then they start to have a headache and convulsive in just a slight moment. Moreover, some project such as genetic engineering may have harmful social consequences- such as GM corps with unproven effects which can destroy the whole ecosystem.
Apart from the practical benefits expressed above, I believe that the government will also take responsibilities for scientific research. Firstly, the highest standards can be set by sponsors for universities to continue the quality research which can beneficial to the society, not to commercialize or competitive edges. Knowledge thus can be shared worldwide throughout the academic community. Secondly, the government would know what its need for the community and they will be willing to invest their property into compulsory fields. One example is the development of renewable energy to meet growing demands.
In conclusion, I agree strongly with the view that governments should bear sole
responsibility for scientific research.
