Some people think that mental strength is the most important factor for success in sports. However, some others believe that it is more important to have strong and fit people. Discuss both views and give your opinions.
Some people feel that mental strength plays the most important role when it comes to making athletes successful, whereas others believe that it should be physical strength and fitness. From my perspective, both strengths are equally important and mutually exclusive.
To start with, people who consider mental toughness is the most important factor in sports might think that with strong mental health, athletes can easily overcome their fears, pressure, and adversity during their career. And this helps them to stay focused and productive for a long period. Imagine if Messi kept being anxious about the criticizes from people saying that his height is not up to scratch to be a soccer player, he would never have become one of the most successful soccer player in the world. On the contrary, if an athlete is mentally weak, when confronting stressful situations or competing with those who are better than him/her, the athlete is likely to falter and be distracted, which probably leads him/her to failures.
Conversely, there are people who think that physical fitness is more important. Obviously, athletes should at least have comparable physical strength, if they want to beat other competitors. As an example, in weigh-lifting competitions, athletes are divided into different groups according to their weight. That means athletes cannot compete with other candidates who are much heavier.
My view is that mental strength is as important as physical strength. This is because, I believe that in order to be successful, athletes should be mentally tough so that they can deal with difficulties outside the match and stay motivated. As well as this, the role of physical fitness cannot be ignored because it seems that physical strength is the most important thing that helps athletes win the match.
