IELTS Writing Task 2 - Language

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people believe that living in another country can be hard, specifically when you do not know the language. In fact, you might have problems making new friends and doing the daily errands. Although this could be a problem, I disagree with this opinion because I believe that these kinds of issues can be easily solved with practice.

Firstly, everyone would find difficult to set in a new place far from home, with a different culture and language. However, I think that the need to socialize, which unites the whole of humanity, go beyond some obstacles such as the knowledge of a language. Besides, this desire to better communicate with other people should incentive to improve your language skills. For instance, this happened to me during my stay in Ireland for the Erasmus project. The willingness to speak fluently and be understood by the others, led me to practice a lot. Therefore, communication problems should be perceived as a great opportunity to improve their own skills, and not as obstacles limiting their actions.

Secondly, more practical problems can be solved by applying the same approach or asking for help. In fact, you can easily ask some strangers or maybe friends to help you to deal with more serious things, such as filling an important form. Moreover, there is always the opportunity to use translators or to meet a compatriot who can give you a hand to solve your problems. For example, during the staying of my brother in Latvia, he relied on an Italian emigrant who could talk Russian, helping him to deal with the more serious things. Hence, there is always a way to solve problems, there is only the need to be imaginative.

In conclusion, I disagree with the opinion that the knowledge of a language may limit people from socializing or limiting their actions. People should not feel bad for their language skills, but just enjoy their adventures and meet new cultures.
