Task: in some countries, owning a home rather than renting one is very important. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
The ownership and the acquisition of a home is a very important step in the life of a person. In many countries, it lays the basis for the birth of a family, in other places the ownership of a house is not a big deal.
One example is that of Americans. A research was conducted to find out what Americans would choose between a house and a car. The results were surprising. Most of the interviewees had no doubts to choose their cars, because they could sleep in their cars without impairing their ability to travel and go working. This outcome might be influenced by the 2007 Financial Crisis which originated from the housing market and sparked to the whole economy.
The same research would have probably led to different results if conducted in Europe. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, the house is seen as a matter of life, a valuable asset on which every good family can always rely on. In fact, people put the efforts of a whole life to pay their mortgages and have their own houses.
I believe that owning a home is an important step that everyone should make in his life, conditional on its financial condition. The stability and security that a house can give are priceless. However, renting can be a good solution in all those cases where you are seeking independence, but you are not ready to make the big step or whenever, as it happened to me, you are in a city or in a country that you do not consider home.
