Every day, millions of tons of food are wasted all over the world. Why do you think this is happening? And how can we solve this problem?

Essay:

In recent years, food waste has been emerging as a serious issue in the world. There are a variety of possible reasons for this, but some reasonable solutions could combat this trend.

In my opinion, two main factors are to blame for the fact that food is wasted increasingly. The first one is that agricultural revolution and food technology bring us more food than ever before. According to Food and Agriculture of the United Nations (FAO), food-growing capacity is now hundreds of times larger than it was at the beginning of the century. Another reason is due to uneconomical lifestyle. Some housewives, for instance, are likely to buy much food when going to the market but some of it is not really necessary. Consequently, it is probably unused and thrown away due to expiration.

Some solutions should be taken to mitigate the problem of food waste. First of all, the change must start with food consuming habits. In other words, people should carefully consider the need of food products that they are going to buy. As shown in report of FAO in 2017, households could save at least 20 percent of their money if they use food efficiently. Another essential measure is that local authorities should implement education campaigns to promote food waste reduction. For example, Stanford authorities organized a campaign to raise awareness of reducing plate waste by displaying informative posters in canteen areas in high schools with simple messages reminding not to accept food they would not eat. This surprisingly led to a mean reduction in the waste consumption up to 15%.

In conclusion, the development of agriculture and technology and people’s awareness are the root causes of food waste. Individuals should change their food consuming habits and local authorities should organize campaigns to enhance awareness of reducing food waste to tackle this problem.
