IELTS Writing Task 2: Employment Competition

Older people who need employment have to compete with younger people. What problem does this cause and what are the solutions?

My answer:

It is obvious that there is a fierce employment competition between younger people and older counterparts. Although this tendency results in serious effects, its impacts could be combated successfully. My writing will analyze the issues caused by this competition and suggest some measures to the problems.

Competing with the young, the older suffer two main drawbacks. To begin with, age discrimination could reduce the probability of getting a job of the older people, in the sense that adolescents are widely thought to be more enthusiastic and passionate about work. Hence, there is lack of financial means to improve the older's livings and they would soon be thrown into poverty. Secondly, older employees might be under great pressure stemming from the fact that the young are creative and they could adapt themselves to changes in work. This may lead to physical and psychological problems such as depression or heart strokes.

However, the menace of this competition can be addressed. Firstly, fixed retirement age should be passed by the government over which no one can be employed, meaning that avoiding so much competition.Moreover, a job which is shared by both types of people are ought to be created so that the young and the old could accumulate knowledge from different forms of employment in a non-competitive work environment. Alternatively, old people can be employed to pass on work experience they have rather than taking a position at work.

In conclusion, there are various negative effects of this rivalry and many measure should be taken to tackle those problems not only by authorities but individuals as well.
