IELTS Writing Task 2 - Education

Some education systems make students focus on certain subjects at the age of 15, while others require students to study a wide range of subjects until they leave school. What are the benefits of each system? Which is better?

When students are 15, a number of schools orient them to concentrate on some certain topics and some still cover various subjects for pupils. Each system has its own advantages and personally, I believe that the latter is better.

On the one hand, focusing on some specific subjects is beneficial to some extent. At the time when students are 15, they have to prepare for the entrance exam to enrol in high school. The exam often contains some compulsory subjects such as Maths, Literature or English so allowing students to only study those educational programs helps them gain in-depth knowledge. This can become their advantage in comparison with other students, especially when the level of competition in some famous schools is extremely high. However, this way of studying may result in the lack of general knowledge, which might create obstacles for students when they study in high schools.

On the other hand, schools should program their educational plans with a variety of subjects to ensure the comprehensive development of students. Having to learn different curricula, students can have a good grasp of many aspects in life. For example, they can improve their strength and endurance with Physical Education class or strengthen their computer skills with Information Technology class. As Industry 4.0 is developing at a fast pace, keeping themselves updated with the newest technology assists students in their future career. Furthermore, when pupils are exposed to such subjects, they have more time to gain knowledge about various fields, which increases the chance for them to discover their passion to pursue in higher education.

In conclusion, while students can gain some benefits when focusing on specific subjects, it is better for them to study every subject in schools.
