IELTS Writing Task 2 - Culture

Topic: Cultures are getting similar than in the past. What are the reasons for this? Is it a positive or negative trend?

In the last decades, it seems that the similarities of different cultures have become bigger than before. I assume that technology development and immigration are two main contributing factors to this trend, and I believe that the trend is totally positive in some certain aspects.

There are two main reasons why cultures are getting the same. Firstly, owing to the advancement of modern technology, people are increasingly exposed to different cultures. As a result, a variety of them would follow traditions that they found themselves interested in and even share with other people. For instance, Christmas was originally known as a holiday of Western countries only, but now it is widespread and becomes a part of some Asian cultures. Secondly, in the 21st century, an influx of international students and immigrants has been witnessed. Not only do they experience different cultures but also bring along their own cultural identities to those countries, resulting in the exchange of various customs and traditions.

In short, many factors including technology development and immigration can make different cultures get more similar than in the past, which I found positive for each individual and the world’s economy
