Ielts Writing Task 2 - City Life

City living in the 21st century is stressful and offers no advantages.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

___________________________________________

Radical transformations in lifestyles have been taking place in large to medium-sized cities over the last few decades. As a result, some people argue that urban life in the 21st century becomes increasingly stressful and offers no actual benefits. However, I am strongly opposed to this point of view.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that a fast-growing city brings about several disadvantages. Living in cities, which are booming in population, entail numerous environmental, transportation and occupational issues. Consequently, both physical and mental problems are believed to arise from the hustle and bustle of the cities. However, this line of reasoning is not sound as far as personal backgrounds are concerned. Specifically, such urban problems might only be novel to immigrants from far-flung regions in search of better job opportunities. Those who are born city dwellers, in the meantime, often treat these social matters as an integral part of their daily lives.

On the other hand, there are a great number of benefits to be reaped from being a citizen. City inhabitants are apparently beneficiaries of high-quality infrastructure, modern facilities and incomparable opportunities that are virtually unavailable in remote areas. The scale of a large city can cater for all tastes and needs, ranging from advanced healthcare systems, prestigious educational institutions to greater job prospects, social welfare programs, to name but a few. Therefore, the positives of living in the city clearly outweigh the downsides.

All in all, while modern city life is clearly associated with high levels of stress, the negatives can be redeemed by a plethora of visible social advantages. As long as city residents can avail themselves of a wide range of services and facilities, they can greatly benefit from a seemingly busy city life.
