Ielts Writing Task 2: Causes and Solutions

It is true that the global phenomenon of urbanisation has brought a wide range of opportunity and prosperity, albeit at a diverse set of environmental and socio-economic issues. Although there will be undoubtedly be some negative consequences of this trend on life quality, societies and government can take steps to mitigate these potential problems.

To begin, there are two main reasons behind the decline of living standard. First and foremost, environmental degradation has a detrimental effect on citizen’s health in a long term. This is due to exhaust fumes from vehicles and industrial zones. As a consequence, the air quality of the city become polluted, which leads to various health-related problems such as respiratory diseases and stroke. Moreover, most urban residents have to work under high pressure because of their fierce competition in workplace. Take Japan as a concrete example, their work is so overload that many Japanese have stress-associated problem and sometimes even lead to suicide.

On the basis of the above reasoning, comprehensive solutions have been identified. The first solution is for the government to invest more in public transport as well as limit the amount of individual transport to ease traffic congestion. Take Singapore as a case in point, it not only has constructed an enormous public subway system throughout the country but also has a policy that restricts the number of private cars on its road. The next solution is reducing work pressure. To be more specific, business leaders should educate their employee how to deal with stress as well as increase job satisfaction by bettering healthcare service and enhancing work environment.

In conclusion, there are many adversities that can reduce urban quality of life such as environmental contamination and work-life imbalance, thus I firmly suppose the mentioned measures can be taken to tackle the worrisome situation.
