IELTS Writing Task 2 - Business relocation

Topic: In some countries, governments are encouraging industries and businesses to move to regional areas outside the big cities. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages

Nowadays, as metropolis becomes the most preferred place to do business, its residents face serious fallouts such as overcrowding and congestion. Some nations are exerting efforts to move business and industries out of primate cities, to suburban areas to address the situation. In my opinion, short term losses due to business relocation would be recouped by the benefits of the diversion.

Admittedly, companies would encounter minor challenges as a result of this movement. Firstly, the cost of shipping is likely to rise when businesses move away from its main customers. This hurts their bottom line and business might shrink as they lose their cost advantage. Secondly, some industries require skilled and high-qualified workers, who are highly available in urban areas. For example, America enjoys its technological lead thanks to Silicon Valley, where gather thousands of high-tech corporations and tech-savvy labor. The assembling fosters a creative, competitive, and thriving environment for its workers; therefore their competitive edges over their competitors.

Nevertheless, despite the disadvantages above, I believe that both enterprises and societies greatly benefit if this trend is commonplace. From a business’ perspective, business leaders can save a wealth of money on commercial real estate and wages. The renting price is often affordable in small towns as demands for housing are lower, helping both employers and employees to cut down on a major cost. More importantly, it also eases the burdens on transportation infrastructure, improves air quality and betters billions of urban dwellers living in substandard housing. This would also turn into an opportunity by boosting the development and economy of rural areas.

In conclusion, even though companies might struggle with delivering its products and finding new workers, there are significantly more merits on both entrepreneurial and societal scale when business and industries are stimulated to relocate themselves away from large cities.
