IELTS Writing Task 2 - Animal products

Question:

In the modern world, it is no longer necessary to use animals as food or other products, such as medicines and clothing. Do you agree or disagree?

These days, mankind has spared no effort to protect animal rights. In relation to this, some believe that food and other products made from animals are no longer vital to serve humans’ needs. In my opinion, this notion is true to a certain extent.

To begin with, there is little doubt that it is no longer compulsory to use animals as input for production. Thanks to the advances in science and technology, a variety of products can be made from other materials. For example, instead of animals, today medicines can be made from a combination of chemicals and clothing can be manufactured from synthetic fibers. Furthermore, the animals exploited for the purpose of producing medicines and clothes are usually the rare ones. To illustrate, rhinoceros are often hunted because people believe that their horns can cure all types of diseases; or tigers are often killed to produce fur coats, therefore, poaching these animals for such purposes could drive them to the verge of extinction. Thus, based on the two reasons stated, abusing animals to generate such types of products should be made unnecessary, therefore inhibited.

Nevertheless, animals should be maintained as sustenance for human kind. This is because animals are provider of essential nutrients that are irreplaceable. As an example, even though vegetable-based meat created nowadays can taste as real meat, it is proven by various studies that there is a special type of vital iron necessary for humans’ blood production that can only be found in meat. As a result, if humans were to erase meat of all kinds out of their daily diet, their healthy would be severely suffered due to malnutrition.

In conclusion, although animal products can be replaced by artificial counterparts in multiple fields, such as pharmaceutics and fashion, I believe animals should remain a staple food source in humans’ diet until an impeccable alternative is invented.
