Question

In many countries, people like to eat a wide variety of food that can be grown in other areas. As a result, people eat more food produced in other regions than local food. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh its disadvantages?

Since exotic food is widely preferred, its consumption has outstripped that of local foodstuff. Personally, I believe that the demerits of this, such as the afflicted sustenance of workers and the loss of cultural identity, outweigh its merits, in terms of the promotion of cultural understanding.

There are several drawbacks to people eating more exotic food. First, this tendency can negatively affect workers in relevant domains. As the demand for local foodstuff declines, domestic food companies will likely struggle to generate profits, threatening the livelihoods of several workers. For example, in Vietnam, should the community stop using rice as the main component of their daily meals and switch to fast food or sushi, rice farmers cannot sell their products, thus being unable to provide for themselves.

Second, the increased consumption of food grown in other areas can dilute a nation’s identity. Due to the commonplace of food produced in other regions, the importance of a homeland’s cuisine can be undermined. This means that when food from other countries replaces local ones as the main dish in restaurants, the following generations can become clueless about their cultural specialties, hence the loss of cultural identity.

However, the trend in eating food grown in other areas is also associated with certain advantages. The main one is cultural understanding. When people embrace a new food culture, they will probably have the opportunity to better their understanding of its lifestyles and eating traditions. Therefore, they can enrich their taste and knowledge related to food, rather than restrict it to a localized range.

In conclusion, I maintain that the downsides of the greater consumption of food from other regions, such as blighting the people’s livelihoods, and endangering the existence of traditions, eclipse the upside of broadening knowledge about other cultures.

(unnatural, wrong form) Personally, I believe that the demerits of this, (Demerit is not the opposite of "merit" and it does not mean "disadvantage." It is a very rarely-used word, and I advise that you not use it. You will not use it correctly.) such as the afflicted sustenance (unnatural phrase - ) of workers and the loss of cultural identity, outweigh its merits, in terms of the promotion of cultural understanding.

I do not understand. "Other regions" can be in the same country. Many students think that if they use high-level "sophisticated" vocabulary words, they will get a higher band score. This is a false impression.

One of the four scoring criteria for Task 2 is "Lexical Resource." A student with a high level of lexical resource not only knows many words, but they know how to use them.in a natural way. Here are the descriptors:

Band score 7:

- uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision
- uses less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation
- may produce occasional errors in word choice, spelling and/or word formation

Band score 6:

- uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task
- attempts to use less common vocabulary but with some inaccuracy
- makes some errors in spelling and/or word formation, but they do not impede communication

Band Score 5:
- uses a limited range of vocabulary, but this is minimally adequate for the task
- may make noticeable errors in spelling and/or word formation that may cause some difficulty for the reader

I believe you would get a score of 5, or maybe lower, in "Lexical Resource" because the communication is frequently impeded by your injudicious choice of words and unnatural phrasing.

Also, you need to read the task instructions very carefully. "Other regions" can be in the same country, with the same or very similar culture.

For example, mangosteen (Mang C?t), Dragonfruit (Thanh Long) and coconuts do not grow well in the mountainous or northern areas of Vietnam, but are prolific in the south. Markets in the north import these fruits from the south.

In the north, farmers grow cherries and apples. These fruits do not thrive in the south, so apples and cherries are exported to South Vietnam.

Also, we import the food that is not in season locally. For example, cherries are in season in my area from June through July. But I can buy cherries flown in from Chile in December. December is summertime in South America, and cherries are in season in our wintertime. The imported cherries are more expensive, but I can enjoy them in the wintertime as a treat.
