IELTS WRITING TASK 2

Films and computer games containing violence are popular. Some people say they have negative effects on society and should be banned. Others say they are just harmless relaxation. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The increasing commonplace of violence-based recreation has raised a question as to whether it may act as a detriment to the community and should be forbidden, or it is harmless. This essay discusses both views and explains why I believe that there should be a ban on films and computer games containing violent features.

Granted, there are reasons why violence-based movies and computer games should be forbidden. First, they can inadvertently instill brutal and unkind characteristics into many people. This means gamers or frequent movie-watchers can become desensitized to horrific behaviors, such as fighting and killing, if they are constantly exposed to them. Consequently, these people tend to commit violent acts on other people without realizing the potential consequences. For example, teenagers may resort to fighting to resolve quarrels with their peers, rather than using diplomacy. Thus, the prohibition of violence-embedded recreation can help create a healthy entertainment world, and encourage certain games and films which are beneficial to the people, prompting intellectual and moral development.

Nevertheless, some argue that violent entertainment is not detrimental for certain reasons, one of which is the censorship process. Undoubtedly, before publicly released, films or games are strictly vetted by related authorities so that the potentially negative impact can be erased, and features existing in them cannot damage society, even if they are violent. In addition, video games and movies also have age certification to ensure that they are used appropriately. Therefore, adults should not be denied access to these forms of entertainment just because underage ones do not comply with the age regulations, and then become afflicted by them.

In conclusion, both views are justifiable. On balance, I maintain that forms of recreation containing violence must cease to exist. This is because it is my firm belief that an age certification is insufficient to preclude people’s access, and a ban is necessary to promote the popularity of healthier forms of relaxation.

P/s: I'm practicing for my IELTS test, so I really appreciate your feedback.
