IELTS Writing Task 2

Hi, I'm going to take the IELTS examination in 6 days, please help me review this essay (and estimate the band if possible) so that I can get an understanding about my band in IELTS Writing. Thank you very much!

Cyclists and car drivers sharing the same roads causes some problems. What are the problems and what can be done to reduce them?

Some people argue that the mix of transport, including bicycles and cars, in the same roads causes some problems. This essay will discuss a possible outcome of this status quo and suggest some solutions for this issue.

The fact that the authority allows cyclists and drivers moving in one road may increase the frequency of traffic jams. When they let people travel by bike on the same roads with cars, the government also needs to divide separate lanes for them on the far left and far right of the roads. This action narrows the space for cars to travel, resulting in a higher chance of getting congestion in the city, especially during rush hour because the drivers now need to give way for cyclists. Moreover, when the roads are experiencing traffic jams, keeping lanes for bicycles would prolong the time citizens spend on the roads.

To address this issue, the authority should separate those two subjects. On the one hand, they can open new areas for cyclists. Small pathways can be constructed by utilising the existing areas such as going through the forest or passing the parks. Since travelling by bike does not require highly qualified roads as cars, opening those will certainly cost less capital and time than for cars. On the other hand, local free-car zones can be put into practice by banning the use of cars on certain hours in the day so that the bicycle users can travel freely on roads.

In conclusion, having both cars and bicycles on the same roads will cause traffic jams more often. Therefore, the government needs to isolate those vehicles.
