TOPIC: More and more parents are allowing their children to play on computers and tablets as they think that children should learn technology skills. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

In today’s computer-based world, it is believed that if children are exposed to mobile devices, they are more likely to absorb technology skills at an early age, hence parents are increasingly letting their kids use these pieces of technology. In my opinion, its drawbacks pale into insignificance compared to the benefits.

On the one hand, the use of electronic devices poses a potential risk to children’s problem-solving and emotional skills as well as their cyber security. To be more specific, playing with blocks of wood and paper could help toddlers develop their mathematical understanding rather than interactive gadgets such as smartphones or computers. That means these pieces can replace the hands-on experience required for the studying and application of maths and science. Moreover, the activities involving other kids will guide them through their emotional skill acquiring path in their early years of life. Overexposure to tablets and laptops increases the phenomenon of antisociality and the number of kids lacking efficient social skills. In addition, as children are in the age susceptible to cyber bullying, the action can bear adverse effects on kids’ mentality and they can hardly recover from it even when they grow up.

On the other hand, children reap enormous benefits from technology exposure. First of all, as children above 4 could learn everything within a short amount of time in an effortless way, utilizing technological gadgets can teach kids the fundamentals of computer science better than anyone, which is extremely beneficial for the future workforce that is predominantly digital. What’s more, with the Internet’s vast resources, benefits to toddlers’ use of mobile devices include early literacy skills, or better academic engagement. Kids can access tools facilitating them to learn in an exciting way, express their creativity and stay connected with others. Additionally, it is undeniable that kids are impressionable beings. Introduction to technology paves the way to their exploration of the world around them, including activities, hence giving them a larger pool of careers and interests needed for their orientation in the future.

In conclusion, although the disadvantages of kids’ exposure to mobile devices are worth taking into consideration, they are overshadowed by the benefits technology brings about.
