As well as making money, businesses also have social responsibilities. Do you agree or disagree? / To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There is a school of thought saying that not only do organizations focus on maximizing their profits but they also carry certain social obligations. Personally, I totally agree with this perspective given the inextricable relationship between the growth of firms and community, and the way the former manifests this social duty.
The cogent reason why I believe that businesses have social responsibilities and earn profits simultaneously is the interdependent link between businesses and society in terms of development. The case of large tech companies perfectly exemplifies the community’s dependence on businesses. Undoubtedly, if tech firms focus on quality and sell high-quality technological gadgets, the users will less likely suffer injuries coming from technical issues. By the same token, were the public uneducated on the harmful effects of fuel-powered vehicles, the automobile industry could not thrive and earn such extensive revenues. Thus, without the purpose of benefiting the public, businesses cannot proliferate.
A further rationale for my belief that companies have social responsibilities is that they benefit society in several aspects. First, businesses are legally required to pay taxes to contribute to society; otherwise, evading taxes would be equivalent to their refusal to obey the law, resulting in serious punishments. Second, they are also conducive to the community by creating job opportunities, enabling individuals to earn an income to afford their needs. Indeed, job creation can also help alleviate poverty and curb unemployment rates.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly agree with the idea that besides gaining revenues, those profit-making organizations are also accountable for fulfilling their corporate social responsibility, considering the relationship between businesses and society, as well as how the former impacts the latter.
