IELTS WRITING TASK 2.

More and more people want to buy famous brands of clothes, cars and other items. What are the reasons? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Today, more people tend to purchase luxury clothing items and automobiles from well-known companies. While this trend may be attributed to several reasons, I would argue that it is a detriment to the youth.

There are two cogent rationales for an increased propensity to buy famous brands of goods. First, these buyers may want to flaunt their wealth and their social status. Undoubtedly, high-end items are exclusively served for certain consumers, most successful and wealthy individuals, since only they can comfortably afford those products. Thus, owing a prohibitively expensive car or a limited edition of a wallet, for example, is generally considered a way for high earners to display their stature. Second, many people buy items from luxury suppliers as they believe that products coming from those brands are of higher quality. Understandably, products sold by famous organizations are often associated with several aspects that lesser-known brands cannot offer to their clients such as durability, uniqueness, and aesthetic values. Therefore, people are more likely to appeal to these labels.

Nevertheless, I firmly maintain that the tendency of purchasing expensive luxury items is detrimental to teenagers as this can inadvertently inculcate an undesirable habit into the youth. The case of impulsive shopping is a textbook instance of this. Since entertainment companies constantly market items and souvenirs that represent several endorsement stars, many people, especially teenage followers of those figures, are often swayed into buying as many goods as possible. Corrosively, these young minds will sublimely adopt the habit of impulse purchase rather than learn to use their money wisely for more necessary purposes namely personal investment or caring for their families.

In conclusion, the increasing number of consumers of well-known brands stems from their desire for ostentation and their trust in the products’ quality. Nonetheless, I still opine that this is harmful since it can lead to a youthful misdemeanor.
