Today, the vast majority of the population is reported illiterate, which will possibly exert a profound adverse bearing on their lives. However, several measures can be taken by the government to address this intractable issue.
The problem of literacy can lead to several serious consequences for the illiterate. First, individuals who lack reading comprehension and writing skills may be reduced to penury. Undoubtedly, these people cannot land jobs that enable them to comfortably cover their monthly expenses, since most occupations now require their workers to have a degree, or at least finish high school. Consequently, they have to resort to labor-intensive yet low-paid jobs such as service staff and construction workers and subsist on exiguous earnings. Second, they are also the ones that suffer most in case of crises. The number of people who died due to their inability to cover healthcare fees during the coronavirus pandemic perfectly exemplifies this.
However, there exist certain steps that governing bodies can take to address illiteracy. One possible solution is to increase the accessibility of education to all children and adults. For example, the authorities can initiate projects where participants, especially those coming from impoverished and uneducated backgrounds, can learn rudimentary skills such as reading or writing without worrying about the fee. Cumulatively, this can help curb the rising illiteracy rate. Moreover, governments should also elevate the public’s awareness of illiteracy. Indeed, they can urge authorities to encourage the local inhabitants to collectively solve this issue through leaflets or announcements. By doing this, communities will be more socially conscious and more proactive in supporting the underprivileged in terms of food and finance during crises.
In conclusion, the prevalence of illiteracy can give rise to various dire repercussions, including rising poverty and mortality rates during crises. Nevertheless, I believe that should the government make education universally accessed by the community regardless of their age and raise the public consciousness of this problem, illiteracy will be solved comprehensively.
