Many scientists believe that now we can study the behavior of a three-year-old child to see whether they will grow up to be criminals. To what extent do you think crime is determined by human nature? Is it possible to stop children from growing up to be criminal?
Scientists assert that investigating behaviors of a three-year-olds will allow them to predict whether children are potential criminals in the future. Personally, I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that criminality stems from biological heritage and there remain several ways to preclude children from becoming criminals.
Admittedly, children’s prolonged exposure to vicious and brutal actions may result in criminality afterwards. This is because when a child often receives harsh punishments, or unintentionally see acts of cruelty, they may passively absorb similar manners. Gradually, without proper intervention, they would likely follow that behavior and therefore turn into offenders when they are older. Moreover, a child’s background arguably determines crime. The high incidence of juvenile delinquency in regions with an improper education system perfectly exemplifies this. As for some teenagers whose families cannot afford the tuition fee, most of them tend to end up engaging illegal activities such as selling drugs and robbing to provide for themselves.
Nevertheless, one’s nurture can stifle one’s nature. For example, whenever children make mistakes, parents should opt for healthy ways to educate them such as grounding or teaching them to accept responsibility instead of corporal punishment. By doing this, children can learn to avoid repeating old mistakes without being physically and mentally affected by violence, which will possibly help them become useful members of society rather than rebellious elements. On a larger scale, leading nations should proactively provide education to poorly educated children to elevate their awareness of criminal manners. For example, they can initiate unprofitable programmes that teach children, especially uneducated ones, about the harmful effects of drugs, gangs. Should those programmes successfully instill a sense of discipline into all children, they will possibly not be involved in crimes.
In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the belief that criminality depends on human instinct as it is rather children’s upbringing that determines. Besides, preventive measures from parents and corporate bodies namely parental schooling and the global propagation of healthy thinking can guide children towards a positive life.
