Ielts writing task 2

Students are relying more and more upon technology and the internet to study. Some people see this as a benefit; others believe students are losing their abilities to think for themselves.

Discuss both points of view and give your own opinion.

Students’ reliance on technology and the internet for learning purposes has been larger than ever, resulting in two reverse points of view: while some view this as an effective way of learning, others are concerned whether this dependence has been undermining learners’ capabilities of thinking for themselves. In my opinion, I believe, despite some downsides, the internet is still a helpful tool for learners to study.

On the one hand, as some argue, the internet possibly has a tremendous impact on students’ academic performance. As a matter of fact, students are likely to misuse the internet. When assigned homework, they usually search for the answers on the internet, rather than figuring them out themselves. As a result, that potentially leads to students’ incline in critical thinking and even trailing behind their peers. Therefore, to some extent, the concern that technology may damage learners’ study is reasonable.

On the other hand, technology also provides us with huge benefits if used properly. One of them is that it allows students to study efficiently. They can easily get instant access to a myriad of resources of subject-related information such as geography, biology, chemistry, etc,... so that they can get in-depth answers for the further questions that teachers usually overlook at school. For instance, thanks to the availability of Youtube, I can watch several experiments on chemistry reactions which might be dangerous if I tried them at home without any supervision. Therefore, not only would that protect me from possible risk, but also help me remember those reactions better via demonstrations.

Overall, even though some drawbacks of technology may negatively influence learners' study sometimes, I believe that as long as students are instructed to use the internet properly, it will bring them many huge advantages which surely facilitate their learning process.
