IELTS Writing Task 2

Task 2: Some people believe that the only purpose of films is to entertain. Others say films should have educational values. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In the contemporary world, movies and films are increasingly popular and becoming an essential demand of entertainment in present society. While several individuals claim that films are simply a source of entertainment, others suggest that they should contain educational content. However, both sides of this debate obtain their own merits, which are worth-considering before reaching any conclusion.

On the one hand, it is justifiable for some people to believe that the only purpose of films is entertainment. One of the striking signs is that there is a significant growth in demand for people to relax and entertain. To be more specific, people nowadays have to face many problems from work, study that make them overwhelmed and overloaded. Therefore, amusing films play an essential role for people to reveal their depression or stress as well as recharge themself to increase their productivity. In addition, boosting the viewer’s mood is also an initial purpose of films and movies as they could have joyful moments in recreational time. For instance, after a hectic day at work, people often spend their time watching something interesting, which could help them temporarily forget about their tasks.

On the other hand, there are several noticeable reasons for me to think that educational content should be added to the movies. One of the most valid-catalysts is that people these days tend to not absorb the valuable information through reading books, newspaper, but only by listening and watching television, videos. As a result, they can broaden their traditional culture as well as knowledge about a variety of aspects of life with visual, audio effects and realistic illustrations. Besides, films with educational lessons produce a wide range of experiences in many fields to equip themself life skills adequately to handle troubles they may have. Another worth-analyzing factor is the high rate of children spending most of their leisure time watching movies, especially cartoons. Due to the fact that innocent children should be educated to increase their awareness about society. Additionally, films with both educational values and entertaining things not only attract the children, but also offer them the experiences and skills to deal with unexpected cases such as child-abuse, kidnap, for example.

Taking all into consideration, whether films contain both educated lessons and recreational content or not is a controversial issue in the contemporary world. From my perspective, although several people think that films should have the only initial purpose of entertainment, there are some clear evidences for me to conclude that educational films are more noticeable.
