TOPIC: Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is a common belief that people living in a country where a foreign language is compulsory can typically face social problems and practical problems. I firmly believe these issues are inevitable if people live abroad. This essay will address the reasons for my view as follow.
To begin with, the biggest problem will be the language barrier. Because of poor language skills, people find it extremely difficult in communicating with native speakers who use many uncommon vocabularies and slang. For example, it will be a challenging period in the beginning when students studying abroad since they are incompetent in using a foreign language which can cause misunderstanding the lessons,… Moreover, the language barrier can affect people’s relationships like friendship. Unless they try to be more proficient in communicating, it may result in depression and isolation.
On top of that, culture shock is one of the real problems. Due to the diversity of culture all over the world, each nation has its own customs, people may feel surprised when absorbing a new tradition, and they need significant time to adapt to this. For instance, while in some western countries, men usually kiss on the back of women’s hand as a way of greeting, but in the eastern lands, this action is impolite. Nevertheless, people can be in trouble with finding jobs when staying in a foreign language. Employers recruit personnel who not only have good professional knowledge but also well-trained communicative skills which is a weak point of immigrants.
To sum up, language and culture barriers are serious problems in society migrant people, even lead to many realistic issues such as culture shock and difficulties in finding a job. For these reasons, it’s challenging for immigrants to confront both social problems and practical problems.
