IELTS Writing task 2

Topic: Some people think that all univeristy students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

It is believed that all tertiary education students should study whatever they prefer. Others argue that they should only be allowed to study the majors that will be useful for their future, such as science and technology based-subjects.

On the one hand, in my opinion, students should be encouraged to fulfill their dream by studying what is relevant to their preferences. First of all, forcing them to learn what they dislike will lead to boredom and inefficiency in absorbing knowledge because of the lack of passion. Additionally, some people may struggle to understand the lectures, therefore, resulting in giving up the current major and transferring to another faculty, which costs a lot of money.

Turning to the other side of the argument, in my perspective, science and technology are both essential in Industry 4.0. However, If university students should only be given an allowance to study those subjects, there might be a scarcity of the labor force in other fields such as history, music, sport, and furthermore. Moreover, due to the complexity of science and technology, not everyone can comprehend its knowledge. Thus, I suggest the universities provide students with basic knowledge and give opportunities to others having their enthusiasm in those areas.

To be concluded, I believe students should be motivated to follow their desire and be equipped with central knowledge about science and technology for the purpose of development in the future.
