IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: Some people believe government should spend money on building train and subway lines to reduce traffic congestion. Others think that building more and wider roads is the better way to reduce traffic congestion. Discuss both views.

My essay:

People have different views about the investment in transport infrastructure to address traffic congestion. Many people agree with the idea of governments should develop train and subway lines, whereas others believe that need to build more and wider roads.

On the one hand, governments need to upgrade and expand public transport provision. The main reason for this view is that train is a kind of transport that can carry a huge number people or big amount of goods. When governments develop more train and subway lines, we will have an integrated public transport system and more people can have access to public transport. As a result, this solution can reduce traffic congestion. The other reason for this view is that traffic by train reduce accidents that cause for traffic congestion. It has happened because train use dedicated lanes so number of accidents by train is less than on roads.

On the other hand, roads should be built more and wider. The first reason for this opinion is that roads are too narrow in cities that population and traffic flow is increasing. Therefore, there are many rush hour traffic jams so people need to build roads wider. Another reason for this opinion is that there are more new residential areas and governments have to build more roads. In my city, there are hundreds new roads every year and this help citizens traffic in the city easily.

In conclusion, there are good reasons why governments should spend money on developing public transport system such as train or subway lines, but building more new roads or widen the roads is necessary, especially in developing cities.
