IELTS Writing Task 2

Question:

Some high schools require all students wear school uniforms. Other high schools permit students to decide what to wear to school.

Which of those two school policies do you think is better?

While several high schools have school uniform, others just let students wear clothes they like when coming to school. In my opinion, implementing a school uniform policy is much more helpful to society.

There are some drawbacks of the trend towards having no school uniform. First, if allowing students to put on whatever they like, schools' governing bodies can not identify outsiders who tend to mingle with students to wreak havoc on school facilities. Second, this type of school policy may lead to a significant increase in bullying which is one of the most challenging problems schools have to face now. Now that, wealthy pupils with flashy clothes have the opportunity to tease their disadvantaged peers who could not afford fancy outfits like they do, which may cause fear of going to school among poor students. As a result, they are inclined to skip classes and even suffer from mental health problems.

On the other hand, I support the view that enforcing a school uniform policy is of tremendous benefit to all people for following reasons. The major advantages of the practice are that it gives students a sense of belonging to a particular school community and promotes school pride. Thus, students wearing identical attire are willing to join hands to contribute to their school's improvement. Another argument in favor of the use of school uniform is that it helps schools superintendents secure a safe school environment for students to flourish. Because wearing similar clothes can spare students from low-income families from social embarrassment of not wearing nice outfits and reduces the chances of students displaying violent behavior, such as bullying. Finally, while shopping for new clothes for every new school day is a huge waste of money and time, school uniform is much more cost-effective and time-saving.

In conclusion, while no uniform requirement has a detrimental effect of both schools and students, my view is that uniform enforcement contributes positively to society by creating a disciplined environment and instilling a sense of pride for school.
