Topic: Some people think that zoos are all cruel and should be closed down. Others, however, believe that zoos can be useful in protecting wild animals.

My essay:

People have different views regarding the role of zoos in the protection of wild animals. While it is said that zoos have harmful impacts on the life of animals and they should be shut down. Personally, I believe that the benefit of the zoo is that preserve endangered animals, protecting them from poachers and thus preventing the extinction of some species.

On the one hand, there are several negative influences of zoos on wild animals. First, Zoos are artificial environments. Some zoos interrupt animals’ normal behavior patterns and routine or lose their instinct to hunt for food. Moreover, they are wild animals and they belong to the wild environment where they can freely fly, jump and run. For example, elephants originally travel long distances in groups and confining them into narrow enclosures is undoubtedly against their migratory nature, developing behavioral problems. Second, keeping animals in cages is unethical. We have no right to use animals for entertainment. Zoos exhibit animals with the aim of making a profit.

One the other hand, I believe that there are still a variety of benefits being offered by zoos and natural reserves. The first advantage of wild animals living in zoos is they are able to avoid being on the verge of extinction. Animals are under threat from humans in many ways, seen for example in the way that their habitats are being destroyed through the cutting down of rainforests, or through poaching. Therefore, in order to save the animals, many wildlife saving organizations and governments do cooperate with local zoos to give species a space to survive. For example, a number of pandas were adopted by a local zoo with the cooperation of authority in China.

In conclusion, although the zoo greatly influenced the instincts of different animals in the world, it seems that keeping wild animals in zoos is more beneficial than harmful. I believe that it is the responsibility of individuals and society as a whole to protect wildlife.
