People should look after their health as a duty for society that they live, rather than personal benefit. What extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true that the proliferation of unhealthy lifestyle is exerting many adverse effects on people’s health and society as a whole. While acquiescing in the view that adoption of a healthy lifestyle is citizens’ social responsibilities, I contend that the populace should retain their health in their own interests.
On the one hand, it is true that a healthy population is of tremendous benefit to the community. To begin with, if one takes greater responsibility for his own health, the ability to get communicable diseases is, in turn, lower; therefore, there is little chance for these deadly diseases to spread out and pose serious health risks to the community. As a result, the expense for medical care would experience a significant decrease and the government could potentially allocate budget to other important sectors such as infrastructure or education, which could be translated into a robust economy. Likewise, when citizens are in good physical conditions, they have the competence to entirely devote themselves to the social development thanks to the capability to work for long hours with higher productivity.
On the other hand, a good health lays the foundation for life fulfillment, and thus citizens should be motivated to manage their welfare as personal benefits. By virtue of staying healthy, one could have the ability to joyfully participate in different aspects of life such as working, traveling, to recreation activities. All of these factors lead to a more satisfactory life than that of those in sickness. In addition, it is indisputable that medical treatments often places a large financial burden on individuals, especially those suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes, tuberculosis or cancer. Therefore, through the medium of initiating appropriate diets and workout schemes, people will be able to prevent both illnesses and money loss.
In conclusion, having a good health is beneficial for individuals and society alike, but it is better-considered for the sake of the individual himself.
