IELTS Writing Task 2

Can you check for me, please! Here is my topic.

Topic:

Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any experiences we may have in our life.
Which do you consider to be the major influence?

You should write at least 250 words.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

My essay:

Many scientists believe that genetic characteristics have more influence on the human’s personality than some experiences in life. There is one recent research which has clearly show that the personality and development of a person are highly likely to depend on the characteristics that they are born with as compared to other experiences in their life. However, I believe that the experiences of a person will have a greater impact on one's personality and development.

Firstly, life experience plays a crucial role in forming a person's traits than genes. But whether these characteristics are able to develop within the personality of an individual surely depends on whether the circumstances allow such development. In other words, each individual distinguishes himself from others more due to after-birth experiences, which vary from person to person. For example, a people who have traveled to a range of countries tend to be more inclusive and keep an open-minded than those without any overseas experiences. Therefore, it is the life experiences rather than genes that decide who we are.

Nevertheless, experiences are natural in making an individual aware of his innate skills. An introvert person does not realize that he is an introvert unless he is in a huge social gathering and an adventurous person does not realize his fondness to adventures unless he gets a chance of performing one. In addition to this, experiences also help a person moderate his characteristics according to the circumstances. For example, a psychology study has found that an introvert or a shy person tries to be more confident and open in a business meeting after experiencing failures for a few times.

In conclusion, it has been proven experience plays a vital role in our lifetime. We become more mature and merely more understandable in practical ways.
