IELTS WRITING TASK 2

Whether or not someone achieves their aims is mostly by a question of luck. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The question of whether luck is the most important factor contributing to one’s success remains a source of controversy. In my opinion, I would totally not agree with this this idea. From my personal perspective, hard work and determination are far more important than luck.

I advocate the notion that being industrious and determined greatly undertake an essential role in leading one to attain his goal. Thomas Edison, one of the greatest inventors in the 20th century, could be described as an excellent example for this idea. He worked tiredlessly on his project of inventing the first light bulb as well as conducted numerous experiments until the finest one appeared. And from then on, he have been remembered by his outstanding work rather than luck. Another clear evidence is the case of Nguyen Ngoc Ky. The disabled man, unluckily, was born without hands and obviously he could not write by hands. But not accepting the truth, he decided to teach himself to write by feet. Although having tons of dificulties, he ultimately succeeded. The fact that he would then become one of the greatest teachers in education history of Vietnam is a concrete foundation proving that even with bad luck an individual are able to achieve his goal with determination.

By contrast, I believe that luck is just an additional elements in the path to success. One clear reason is that a student can not always wish for a high score with only luck. Maybe, in an exam, the student somehow knows how to deal with those questions. However, this thing might never come back again with those subjects required learners to learn by heart exactly content of theories. Another clear evidence for my belief is that luck usually leads one to short-term achievements. Take people winning lottery as an instance for this notion. Certainly, winning lottery is purely a type of luck because the winners do not have to do anything to get those money. Nevertheless, it can not be denied that they are not able to win lottery forever. The over-reliance on luck has never been a wisdom target to follow since it basically prevents people from attaining their long-term goals.

In conclusion, I still protect my point of view that considering luck as the primary determinant of success is a fallacy. Only hard work and strong will could help people reach their dreams.

P/S: Thank you for helping me.
