Some people believe that visitors to other countries should follow local customs and behavior. Others disagree and think that the host country should welcome cultural differences.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

After the advancement in tourism industry around the world, many people tend to visit foreign countries. Nonetheless there is a debate over whether or not the visitors be allowed to follow the host country’s customs and traditions. In this essay, I’ll be discussing about this notion and conclude it with my opinion.

On one hand, most countries believe that tourists should respect local cultures and hence adapt them. For instance, in some Middle East countries, every woman wears an outer garment with a headscarf which in Arabic language is called “Abaya” to cover their body, therefore every foreigner woman has to wear the abaya, irrespective of their religion. Moreover, it would be easier for the visitors to adjust themselves in a new environment. In other words, they wouldn’t feel indifferent or an alien.

On the other hand, if government would allow non citizens to practice their habitual customs, more and more tourists would be attracted to such places. In fact, people would feel themselves more comfortable. Inciting an example, in some Asian countries, drinking alcohol and wearing western dresses is prohibited, therefore such people would feel ease in following their own culture in western countries. Furthermore, it would not only give knowledge to the people about the lifestyle and traditions of their foreigners but also might develop friendly relationship between them. To summarize, tourists should not be bound to acclimate to the host country environment, so that they can enjoy their tour.

In conclusion, I believe that, although to adjust oneself in a foreign environment, one has to adapt their way of living, yet equally important is to allow visitors to follow their native customs in order to get a homelike feeling.
