Is there any value in studying academic subjects that are not ‘useful’ in terms of generating wealth for the country? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples...
When it comes to education, many people argue that efforts should only be put into “useful” fields of study that will further benefit the country’s finance. In my opinion, many academic subjects can still be very valuable even if they do n’t directly add up to the current economic climate.
It is undeniable that whichever professional career one chooses to dive in, there is always a combination of skills and qualifications required. Many academic subjects which appear to be in no way related to the economic growth can turn out to be extremely useful. For instance, while an entrepreneur’s main requirement might be money and staff management, he or she must also be able to identify customers’ needs and desires to make profits, which is why basic knowledge about human psychology should be added. Linguistics or sociology can in turn generate wealth as they contribute largely to communication between organizations and companies. So a variety of academic subjects is indispensable.
Many academic subjects may also be useful in enhancing people’s passion and quality of life. In my opinion, being able to acquire certain knowledge in the fields that they are really interested in can bring them a sense of satisfaction as they go through their lives. It is not always about money and financial problems. Some people can pursue hobbies related to geology just to gain new insight into the planet that they are living on. Others can learn new languages for the reason that they are in some ways absorbed in linguistics. These academic subjects will one day lead us to invaluable discoveries and explorations.
In conclusion, although it might seem sensible to study only the disciplines that will raise the economic status, many other academic subjects should also be added to the syllabus as they are proven to be useful not only in terms of economic growth but also in people’s quality of life.
