In many cities, the use of video cameras in public places is being increased in order to reduce crime, but some people believe that these measures restrict our individual freedom. Do the benefits of increased security outweigh the drawbacks.

It is true that surveillance cameras are being increased in common places. Although some critics see this as an attack on privacy, I think that the benefits do outweigh the drawbacks.

On the one hand, there are two main reasons why people might disagree with the use of video cameras in public places. Firstly, these cameras invade our individual rights. People are constantly being watched by the authorities or private security films. In this case, many people recognize this intrusive and feel that recording their movements is a form of state control their individual freedom. Secondly, Operating this monitoring cameras system makes the government spends a lot of money from his budget to repairing and upgrading. For example, China is reported that spending one-third of GDP form the government revenue for monitoring systems around the big cities as Beijing, Shanghai.

On the other hand, although the drawback was mentioned above, I think that use of CCTV cameras to supervise public areas is a positive measure. The key benefits of video surveillance are to deter criminals and prevent crime. For instance, criminals as traffic offenders or pickpockets are less likely to operate in parts of cities where they know that they are being constantly observed. Moreover, surveillance cameras support police officers easily to find stray people in massive areas such as parks, subway stations and so on. For example, police officers can determine immediately the location of a lost child in theme-park thank to monitoring cameras system.

In summary, it seems to me that we gain more than we lose from the monitoring cameras bring to our cities.
