IELTS WRITING TASK 2

In many countries nowadays, young single people no longer stay with their parents until they are married, but leave to study or work somewhere else. Do you think this trend has more advantages or disadvantages?

Answer

In recent years, youngsters tend to choose to live away from their parents for working or studying at an early age. While there are some drawbacks can be seen form this trend, I argue that the advantages more than compensate for any disadvantages.

One the one hand, the young who want to live independently could face up to many difficulties in their lives. Firstly, they no longer receive support instantly from their parents for various aspects like financial issues or mental health problems. In addition, they must make up their mind and make decisions themselves to any situations that they encounter in the social life. As a result, some people who are not accustomed to living independently could feel lonely or homesick and so that, their mental health could be suffered. Secondly, some youngsters who are not mature enough when leaving home to enter adult life could be easily swayed by harmful content which is very popular in the social media nowadays, such as drug abuse, violence or casual sex. Thus, they might adopt unhealthy habits and improper behavior and end up falling behind their studies or even dropping out of college.

On the other hand, I agree with those who argue that living alone will benefit both the youngsters and their families. The main reason is that in the independent situation, the youngsters have the freedom to do everything in their own way and also must be responsible for each action. By that way, they would be more mature, careful and experienced. It is thought that by living independently, youngsters will have more chances to broaden their knowledge and improve interpersonal skills, which are the first steps on the ladder of success in their future careers. Another reason is that due to the generation gap, not living in the same house will reduce the conflict between the young and their parents because of differences in the point of view. In Vietnam for instance, Vietnamese family tends to own a land which is nearby their house to prepare the accommodation for their children when they are suitable for living alone in the future. By that way, both parent and children have their own freedom but also can take care of each other if necessary.

In conclusion, I argue that the advantages of this trend are more significant than the disadvantages.

Note: Thanks for checking my mistakes. I would be very greatful if you can estimate my band score for this essay. Thank you so much.
