Some people say that the government should control the amount of violence in the media. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer

The idea that, government should take step to censor the amount of violence in the media remains a source of controversy. In my opinion, while I accept that violence contents need to be controlled, I do not believe that it is just only the responsibility of government to do this.

There are two important reasons why violent contents should be restricted. Firstly, these harmful materials have a negative impact on children. Because children’s psyche is still immature and unformed, so that they are not able to distinguish between right and wrong. As a result, youngsters may adopt unhealthy habits and improper behavior that they saw on TV or anywhere else. For instance, they might fall under the impression that the use of weapons is fashionable without being aware of the risk they can carry and thus, they might end up by turning into a violent offender. Secondly, even a mature adult seeing a lot of violent contents on TV or in movies may be influenced in a detrimental way. The fact that excessive violence causes people to be apathetic to see violence acts, or even worse, they may consider violence as an effective method of solving conflicts in real life. Consequently, the number of offenders has climbed in many cities over recent decades since the explosion of the media, especially the violent action movie.

However, the measures of just authority are not enough to solve the negative consequences of violence contents. It is the fact that nowadays, it is relatively easy for people to download movies or games that contain violent elements from the internet. This is where parental involvement takes responsibility to make sure that what children are watching. In addition, adults must be more responsible about what they watch and set a role model for their children. If people become less interested in watching violent contents, fewer products will be produced and as a result, the negative effects could be alleviated.

In conclusion, due to the undeniable harmful effects of media violence, I strongly believe that in order to regulate and monitor violent contents, both governments and individuals must take steps immediately.
