New technologies have changed the way children spend their free time.

Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

In recent years, there has been a growing trend toward using technological devices among children. While spending time playing with these pieces of technology is a new way for children to explore their surrounding world, there is consensus that some consequences might arise. Below are some specific advantages and disadvantages of this issue.

On the one hand, new technologies encourage children to use their free time to broaden their knowledge, which is possible in fun ways through interactive software. For example, children might spend hours on the Internet learning about dinosaurs or how to make simple crafts such as cards, toys, flower arrangement and so forth. Additionally, the Internet offers youngsters countless opportunities to discover friends with the same interests in any part of the world, using chat rooms and social networks such as Facebook. As a result, new technologies both promote the habit of self-study and encourage young people to develop a wide circle of virtual friends.

On the other hand, there are some major drawbacks when children are addicted to electronic games or social networks. Clearly, these habits might take up a great amount of their spare time for outdoor activities, which are of great importance to their physical development and social skills. As a result, it may lead to health problems for some youngsters such as eye-strain and headaches. Secondly, without parental supervision, children might accidentally access to online pornography or massively popular violent content on the Internet. Consequently, they are likely to develop aggressive behaviours at schools.

In conclusion, it is obvious that without proper control, accessing to the Internet does more harm than good for the children.
