IELTS Writing Task 2

These days, people work in more than one job and often change career several times during their life. What are the advantages and disadvantages of it?

Taking up many employments in one’s lifetime are becoming more and more prevalent among people of today. While this social phenomenon can provide potential benefits, the downsides should also be taken into consideration.

On the bright side, it is believed that a change in career appears to open the door to new experiences. For instance, a different work environment introduces not only a set of customary manner to learn but also another business community to integrate. Such adaptation is ideal for those who are already adventurous or want a break from routine. Besides, by switching job, people give themselves the opportunity to climb up the career ladder. Obviously, there is no point in holding down a dead end job which only leads to frustration and boredom. Instead, a career move is more likely to bring a breath of fresh air to the daily life and thereby comes along with promotion prospects as well as higher social status.

Having said that, there are certain drawbacks to consider. Apparently, the beginning of a new job has never been an easy option. In fact, it is a lengthy process to accustom to unfamiliar things such as the differences in working style and the nature of the workplace. This would inevitably involve determined effort or even starting from scratch. Also, there is a serious possibility that the present career is not as good as the old one. If this happens, the financial stability is at risk of being threatened. In addition, it may take more time to settle in a satisfactory job.

In conclusion, having and changing multiple careers are not without its potentials and pitfalls. It is up to each person to weigh the pros and cons carefully before making a decision.

You have not clearly distinguished between changing jobs (e.g. being a cook at KFC to being a cook at a higher-paying restaurant) and changing careers (e.g. being an English teacher to being a pilot for an airline). These are confused in your essay.
