The two diagrams show the lifespan and the changes to which the salmons go through.
Overall, salmons go through different transformations either in terms of size or in their ability to survive in different areas and conditions.
Firstly, salmon eggs are laid in a slow-moving upper river, in places protected by reeds and small stones. The eggs will hatch after approximately 5-6 months and this little fish is called fry. Its dimension may vary between 3cm and 8cm. Besides, they tend to move to lower rivers where the water flow is faster. Fries are used to spending around 4 years in these areas before leaving freshwaters for the open sea. In this stage they are called smolt and their size is around 15cm.
Once smolt move to the sea, they usually stay in salt waters for 5 years before turning into salmons which dimensions vary between 70-76cm. The final step, instead, involves salmons to return to freshwaters where they lay the eggs in the same places where their life began.
