Question

The graph below shows the number of shops that closed and the number of new shops that opened in one country between 2011 and 2018. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make relevant comparisons. write at least 150 words.

The line graph given indicates the quantity of shops that closed and opened in one nation from 2011 to 2018.

Overall, in the beginning, there were more opening shops than closing ones. However, at the end of the period, the number of closures was higher.

In 2011, there were around 8500 shops opening in this country when the number of closings was less than about 3000 shops. In the next year, the opening shops went down by more than half to 4000. Meanwhile, the number of closures dipped slightly to 6000. From 2012 to 2014, both closing and opening shops increased to approximately 6300.

From 2014 to 2015, the number of shops that closed plummeted to under 1000, which was followed by a quick rise to around 5100 in 2016, and then this number nearly stayed unchanged till the end of the period. During this period, the opening shops shrank gradually and hit a low of 3000 shops which opened in 2018.

To get a good score on this essay, you have to point out the differences between the two curves. That is called the "net change". If you just focus on each curve separately and copy numbers from the graph to your essay, your score will be limited.

Overall, during this eight-year period, there were only two years when there were more new shops added than established ones that went out of business. One of those years had the lowest number of closures. The other had the largest number of openings.

In 2011, there were 2100 additional stores in the country; even though 6400 went out of business, 8500 were created. That year was not only notable in having the most new shops, it was one of the two with a net increase. There was a gain of 3200 in 2015; however both numbers were at or near their lowest values. Only 800 were closed, lowest on the record, and 4000 were opened. In the other six years, there were more closures than openings, the largest losses coming in 2013 and 2018, with a net decreases of slightly over 2000. Over the entire period, about 38,500 new stores appeared but 41,600 closed, for a total net loss of around 3000 stores.
