Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Number of hours of housework* per week, per household (1920 - 2019)
housework* = washing clothes, preparing meals, cleaning
The first line graph illustrates the alteration in ownership of three categories of electrical appliances (washing machine, fridge and vacuum cleaner) and the second one compares how much time spent on doing chores in one nation from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is obvious that over the period shown, the proportion of families that owned electrical appliances saw an upward trend. Meanwhile, the opposite was true for the number of hours doing housework per week in every household.
In 1920, only about 5% of total households had a refrigerator, while the percentage of families possessing vacuum cleaners and washing machines accounted for 30% and 40% respectively. In the next 40 years, the percentage of household ownership of refrigerators witnessed a soar to 90%, after which it rose to 100% till the end of the period. During this period, the proportion of households owning vacuum cleaners rocketed to 70% before reaching 100% in 2000 and staying unchanged until 2019. Besides, the percentage seen for ownership of washing machines also increased by 30% in this period, at which point it fell slightly to around 65% in 1980 and then grew to about 75% in 2019.
In the second graph, one can see that in 1920, every household allocated 50 hours weekly to do housework (including doing the laundry, cleaning and cooking). Additionally, this number went down more than half to 20 hours in the following 20 years and then hit a low of 10 hours per week in 2019.
