The line graph compares the number of people daily commuting by three different types of transport in the UK over a period of 60 years.
Overall, the figures for car and train are predicted to show dramatic increases, while the number of bus travellers in the UK drops slightly. In addition, the number of car commuters is expected to see the most considerable change.
In 1940, there were only about 2 millions of people commuting by train, compared to 4 millions of bus and 5 millions of car. From 1970 to 2000, the UK saw a significant growth of 2 millions in the number of people travelling by car, a gradual rise of 1 million in that of the train, whereas the figure for bus remained approximately 4 millions .
Looking into the future, the figures for car and train are expected to see a sharp increase of around 2 millions of people, reaching up to 9 millions and 5 millions respectively. By contrast, there will be only 3 millions of people travelling by bus in the UK by 2030.
