The charts below indicate the percentages of students at a university in Britain who are capable of speaking several languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010.
In terms of students who can speak only one foreign language, there was a downward tendency in 2 years. Stated differently, French only and Spanish only accounted for 15% and 20% respectively in 2000 while 10 years later, the percentage dropped by 5% and 10% in turn. Furthermore, German only remained stable during the period, standing exactly at 10%.
On the other hand, it is striking that the rate of students who were not able to speak other language was relatively high, rising from 30% to 35%. In addition, another language and even two other languages both witnessed a 5% improvement at the end of the period from 10% and 15% respectively in 2000.
Overall, while the proportion of students can speak a foreign language consist of French, Spanish or German declined steeply, the opposite was true for the other languages. However, the proportion of students who cannot speak any other language was still the leading rate at 2 years.
