The table illustrates the data on communication skills that people were surveyed whether they were essential in their jobs within the company and external in two years:1997 and 2006.

Overall, the figure for people who were asked about dealing with people contributed the largest part of the survey, whereas making speeches and presentations was the skill asked about the least.

With regard to external communication, in 1997, there were 35% of people asked about their knowledge of particular products or services, compared with selling a product or service(24%), advising or caring for customers or clients(36%), and the commonest: dealing with people(60%). By 2006, a decrease of 3% was seen in the people being questioned about selling a product and service, while the figures for those left categories experienced a slight increase.

During the same period, just only 7% of people were asked about making speeches and presentations in 1997, whereas the other five skills accounted for above 13% of the survey. The year 2006 saw a more than 4% increase in all internal communication skills, apart from planning the activities of others, which rose only 1%.
