The line illustrates the proportions of those who did swimming, team sports, and gym activities in a UK sport club in the 1983 – 2003 period.

Overall, swimming accounted for a sharp fall from 1983 to 1998. Whereas, the pattern was completely reverse when it came to team sports and gym activities over the same period. These trends, however, underwent variations in 2003

To begin with, the percentages of swimming and gym activities witnessed the opposite changes between the period of 1983 and 1998. The number of people who took part in swimming experienced the highest rate compared with the trough of the gym activities in the year of 1983 (50% as against only 5%). Swimming’s joiners, however, went down abruptly to 15% in compared with the sharp increase of gym activities to 25% during the 15 years. After 1998, a stabilization was undergone by them until 2003.

When it came to team sports rates, there was a slight rise from 1983 to 1998: 32%, 40% respectively. Nevertheless, its popularity declined to the same rate of the beginning itself (32%) in 2003
