The pie chart illustrates there are four major causes for farmland becoming deteriorated in the world today mainly including over-grazing, deforestation, and over-cultivation. While the table compares the causes of land degradation in 3 regions: North America, Europe, and Oceania in the 1990s.
Overall, spending on animal grazing and tree clearance account for the largest proportions of degradation, constituting 35% and 30%. Over-cultivation crops also make up 28% of global degradation. Other causes represent only 7% collectively. In addition, it is clear that Europe suffered more than farmland degradation than the other regions.
As can be seen from the table, Europe, with the highest percentage of land degraded ( 23%), followed by Oceania and North America, by 13% and 5% respectively. Especially, in Europe, 9,8% was suffered from deforestation, with 7,7% from over-cultivation, and 5,5% from over-grazing. In contrast, North America has the lowest proportion of degraded land, in particular, over-cultivation occupied 3.3%, animal grazing (1,5%), and only 0,2% of tree clearance. Finally, the figure for Oceania is slightly more than that of Europe, which had 11.3% of overgrazing, 1.7% of deforestation.
