Question

The given table provides information about the quantity of people involving in using British airport, particularly three outstanding airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted from 1998 to 2003.

Overall, what stands out from the table is that Gatwick is the busiest air-terminal through the years. Moreover, during the first 3 years, all British airports' visitors grew steadily, though, since next 3 years, they had experienced different trends

In 1998, the figure of Heathrow's travellers was around 27 millions, less than the highest one - Gatwick's figure about 10 millions, whereas Stansted started with the lowest number of visitors all time, 17.3 millions. After that, while Gatwick's travellers saw a stable upward trend through every single year and reached 44.4 millions in 2000, Heathrow and Stansted rocketed around double, compared to the first year.

Regarding to the quantity of people using major airports mentioned over the second period, Gatwick's visitors continued to rise and hit the peak at 69.3 millions in 2003, when Stansted also had a slight increase and then levelled off at 43.3 millions in the last 3 years. On the other hand, the number of people using Heathrow airport dropped significantly by 15 millions and then recovered at 45.6 millions.

Overall, the number of people using these airports nearly doubled over the six years, from 81 to 158 million. However, this increase was not equally distributed among the three airports. In 1998, Gatwick, the largest, handled more than twice the number of Stansted, the smallest of the three. By 2003, Stansted had gained market share, but was still the smallest of the three.

Gatwick served the largest number of passengers in every year except 2000, where it was briefly overtaken by Heathrow, 48.2 versus 44.4 million passengers. Stansted was a close third, having nearly 40 million, about 10% less than Gatwick. Its growth in passenger volume came primarily in the first three years, rising from 17.3 to nearly 40 million. In contrast, from 2001-2003, the number of passengers it served was constant at 43.3 million. However, that was more than two and a half times as many as in 1998. Heathrow was the only airport which had a dip in passenger count during the period. In fact, it had fewer in 2003 than it did three years earlier. In the final year, 2003, slightly less than half the total number of travellers went through Gatwick with a little over a quarter each for the other two.
