Task 1: The maps below show the Riversdale University’s campus in 1973 and in 2010. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The given maps provide information about some of the key changes that took place on the campus of Riversdale University between 1973 and 2010. Overall, the site underwent some major alterations, focusing on expanding and relocating old building around the campus.
One of the unchanged features of the campus is the river which cut through the area and separate it into two halves. In 1973, the West side of the river was occupied mostly by open fields and a big nature reserve. It is noticeable that while the sporting fields and ovals remained throughout the period, the reserve was completely replaced by a new car park and a tram stop, in addition to a new building for the Medical School that was proposed for 2019.
The other side of the campus also experienced some significant changes. Firstly, two separate buildings for law and social science study facing the old reserve were joined together into one larger building. This allowed for the expansion of the library towards the river. Behind the library, there still stood the Administration building, the Sciences building and the tram stop further to the East. In the North – East corner, the Student Union was relocated to the opposite side next to the sporting fields in order to enlarge the parking space. These two buildings on the left of the car park also remained, however, one of them was administered by the Information Science department instead of the Fine Arts department.
